recording

My absolute favorite "for me" past time is my studio. Until now, I haven’t shared any recordings that have come out of it. However, I intend to change that! The MP3 below was recorded during a 4 hour jam session when my buddy Dano (of Beavis Audio fame) came to visit. Although he's not a bass player and has never played with Dave (Drumming Dave) and I, he did a terrific job. This clip is 100% improvisation. There are a few missteps but overall I'm really pleased with what we created "on the fly". It's a good size download (13MB for 10 minutes of audio). We're constantly tweaking the mix, so I welcome any feedback on the music or the production.

Enjoy!

If you're curious, this was recorded through a Mackie 1200f in my home studio. I've got five mics on the drums and four mics on three guitar cabinets. The bass is recorded through a Bass Podxt Pro using digital outs to the Mackie. One channel is the dry bass signal and the other is the modeled bass. Everything was recorded and mixed in Sonar 7 Producer Edition.

The construction of the new studio is finally complete! These are some early pictures - things are now more organized and cleaner - I hope to get new pics up soon.

Here's a shot of desk and drums. I'm using a Mackie 1200f as the recording interface into a beefy quad-core machine. For Bass, I've got a Podxt Pro running into a Crown 1000 watt amp and then into the Mesa cabinet you see in the picture.

Here's a close-up of the underside of the drum riser. The black spots are Auralex U-Boats. It's ported on the ends and filled with insulation so the entire riser acts as a giant bass trap. This thing is HEAVY! It really tuned the drums and the room though!

Here's a shot of the drums with the guitars and amps. I love this room! :)
